Gainey Stepping Down
« on: February 08, 2010, 03:38:43 PM »

Bob Gainey is stepping down as General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. Pierre Gauthier will replace him and has signed a long term deal to remain as the Habs GM past this season. Gauthier entered the league in 1981 where he served as a scout for the Quebec Nordiques until 1993. He then served as assistant general manager, general manager and president throughout the league until joining the Montreal Canadiens in 2003 as the Director of Professional Scouting. In 2006 he added the title of assistant general manager. Bob Gainey had been the team's general manager since 2003.

The timing does sound a little off though. It's less than a week until the roster freeze for the Olympics and then immediately after is the trade deadline. Odd timing for a GM. The only thing I can think of is that maybe he's being pressured to deal someone like a Carey Price and he doesn't want to be the guy that gives him up. Otherwise the timing really doesn't make sense.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I'm sad to see him go... I was hoping he'd stick around and go after Redden and Drury for them this off-season  ;D

Gainey will stay on as a senior advisor. Kind of Cliff Fletcher-esque.

He isn't the interim. He's the new permanent GM.
